Answer: my business plan, by the end of 15 days I want a plan, a road map for my business. And now at day 7, nearly half way through the challenge, it’s good time to check in and see how that plan is coming along. But before I do that lets talk more about focus.
Focusing isn’t always my strong point. I can be a complete ninja at focusing when I’m crystal clear about what needs to be done, if the parameters are set for the task then I’m pretty good at getting my head down. Add a deadline, preferably a tight one and I’ve got no choice but to knuckle under. But, add freedom of choice and decision making into the mix and things start to go awry.
Firstly there’s that scary thing of decision making. I dislike making decisions about certain things. What if I make the wrong choice? What if I commit to something and it fails? It feels safer to have ideas and their potential than to go for them and find out what their really made of. Making a decision and choosing one plan of action for my business is difficult because there is SO much I like to do, I see the potential in so many avenues I don’t want to say yes to one (or some) if it means saying no to others. What I’m learning though is that this pattern is keeping me really well and truly stuck and stuck is not where I want to be, being stuck is worse than missing out on those ideas. After all, I could always come back to them after I’ve finished what I’ve started.
Secondly there’s the “shiny object syndrome”, as a creative person I love ideas, especially new ones. I am easily distracted by new projects and plans. I often get involved with other peoples projects rather than working on my own, it’s easier to work in a frame work than to create something from nothing.
Here’s what I have been doing…
It's funny, I once told my best friend to "pick a pie" i.e. make a decision when it came to her illustration business years ago - if only I could take my own advice!
